Breast Care

Breast care:
The 3 initial steps of Breast care
1- BSE (Breast self exam), 2- CBE (Clinical breast exam) and 3- mammography. Keeping this in mind lets make ourselves breast aware.

Awareness for yourself:
-Know your family health history
-Talk to your doctor to assess your personal risk
-If you are at average risk get screened every year starting at age 40
-If you have a family history of breast cancer (in a first degree relative i.e. mother or sister) talk to your doctor about screening to be started earlier than 40 years of age the (appropriate time to start screening is 10 years prior to diagnosis in your relative)
-Know how your breasts feel, some breasts feel lumpy
-Watch for change such as new lump, redness, darkening, persistent pain, dimpling of breast, pulling in of nipple, itchy or scaly nipple, redness, darkening or persistent pain.
Breast Self Exam(BSE): Do a monthly self breast exam
Step one: In the shower or standing up .With finger pads gently feel the entire breast including armpit for a lump or thickening. Use right hand for left breast and left hand for right breast.
Step two: In front of a mirror start with arms by your side, and then raise both arms above your head. Look for change in size, shape, dimpling or change in skin texture, gently squeeze nipple to check for discharge.
Step three: Place pillow under right shoulder and examine right breast with left hand. With the flat of your finger pads start from outer circle of breast spiraling towards the nipple including under arm, repeat on other side

Clinical Breast exam (CBE):This is a breast exam done by your doctor.Every 3 years starting age 20 and yearly starting age 40

Limit  alcohol intake
Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight.

Remember if breast cancer is diagnosed early, there are less toxic treatment options. When diagnosed at stage 0 it is 98% curable, the survival drops to 15% if diagnosed at stage 4. Breast cancer is not contagious, nor is it a curse to womanhood.

We will not let breast cancer alter our lives, and the lives of our loved ones. Let's find cancer, before it finds us. So let's get breast healthy and strive for early detection, because early detection is the best prevention.

Common Breast conditions:
Look for lump, nipple discharge, infection, pain, inverted nipple, and skin changes .Remember not every breast lump is breast cancer, but please visit your physician, when you have a breast related problem.
